OQOTD - What Is The Most Overrated Car On The Market Today

Todays’s QOTD is running late so let’s have one between us. I will compile and share the results later or maybe tomorrow.

Some very good cars are getting no coverage at all and noboby buys them, that’s a shame. Saab and Suzuki comes to mind. On the other hand, some cars are getting raving reviews while not being that good at all.

What car for sale right now is the most overrated ?

The numbers seem good on the new ‘Bu. Unless there was a typo on the order guide, the base 1.5T makes something like 240 ftlbs of torque. And if it holds true to its claim of 300lbs lost it squeaks in at just under 3100lbs, which is crazy light for something basically as big as an Impala.

Overrated in the sense that it’s rated as “buyable” judging by how many of these pieces of shit I keep seeing on the road. My Grandma wanted one, so I had to go test drive one for her. It’s pretty terrible. There were cheaper cars made 15 years ago that are much better in pretty much every regard. The CVT is especially bad.

Granted, it’s not as fast as a WRX or as refined as a GTI, or as manic as it’s little brother, but it’s cheaper than the first 2 and more practical than the last so I’d have to say that it deserves every bit of praise that it gets.

I disagree about there being “better, cheaper” cars 15 years ago. Every midsizer made by GM/Ford/Chrysler was disposable, Toyota was still making appliances, Nissan was unreliable, Mazda hadn’t yet released the 6, Mistubishi had no idea what they were doing, and the Koreans were still sourcing parts from Dollar General.

The only lower-tier midsizer that was an all around OK car was the Honda Accord. And even if you put that up against a modern Altima, the Altima has a much higher level of fit/finish, a more composed ride, and a LOT less road noise.

Granted, my pops has an Altima, and I dislike driving it, but it’s maybe mediocre at worst.

One mans opinion, also the base wrx cost 3 grand over the base st (more than 10% of the total cost of the car) And lets not forget that ford offers a tune under warranty and subaru does not. Look up ford racing performance pack.

The subaru feels great to drive fast, dont get me wrong (better than the focus) , but i wouldn’t want to live with one, thats why i own an st. Real world driving is different from canyon carving, which is all these auto reviewrs do. Also you can fit shit in a subaru sedan other than your bro friends with sideways hats.

I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. Personally, I couldn’t give two shits about road noise or ride (that being said, the Optima I had her test drive rode better and had similar noise levels) or overall fit and finish, but that could just be me because when I’m looking at a car, I’m trying to figure out which switches won’t work in five years and if I can tell what the car’s doing based on my inputs. Every pedal felt like it had a sponge under it, the engine’s a joke, the CVT would have been better as a standard four speed, and the steering wheel felt like I was playing Out Run circa 1993. Some of this is just the nature of modern cars (the electric steering that Nissan hasn’t mastered yet, the CVT to eek out a few extra miles, etc), but it felt more like a dead appliance to me than any Toyota ever could.

A WRX premium in my area lists at $30,285 which means that is not including TTL. My ST was fully loaded with the exception of a sun roof and ran me a bit over 25k before TTL. So for more money, the WRX would have given me a car with less cargo room, cloth seats that I found to be less comfortable than the leather Recaro buckets in the Focus, but would have been a bit faster and not been FWD (which is honestly not a huge deal since this is my DD, and not a track car for me).....doesn’t sound that overrated to me. In fact, in order to move up to similar interior options as well as HID’s from Subaru, you have to move on to the STI, which list between $36,500 and $36,700, granted you also get a significant power bump there too, but the ST is plenty quick enough to keep me happy so the extra power isn’t enough to make me want to spend $10k more to get the options I wanted from Subaru.

Just as I find a big one around the WRX *shrug* I did a lot of cross shopping when I was looking to replace my MCS with something more practical, and with the Subaru I was amazed at how the dealers treated the car. When I went to the Subaru dealers around here and asked to test drive the WRX because I was considering it as a replacement for my current vehicle, you’d have thought I rolled in to a chevy dealer driving a beater civic and asked to test drive the latest Z06 Corvette. Meanwhile at the ford dealer, the next words out of their mouth were asking what options I was interested in, and if there was a certain color I was looking for....because it’s a freaking mid-priced performance hatchback. The only reassurance they wanted was asking if I knew how to drive stick, when I told them the one I was driving now was manual, that was the end of that. The only reason I wound up test driving the WRX was because a friend owns one and was willing to let me take it for a spin, and I will say that it’s a damn fun car, but it’s not the performance monster that the Subaru dealers make it out to be. Hell, I was able to get a test drive of a manual GTi from a local VW dealer without any hassle as well, and those ran slightly higher in price than the Subaru did. That experience, to me, spoke far more of a circle jerk existing around the WRX than around the ST, or even the GTI, at least on levels that actually have an impact. You can find internet circle jerks around pretty much any car, hell I’ll bet you that even the Mitsubishi Mirage has fanboys drooling over it and extolling it’s virtues in some dark corner of the internet. Now, as you said, I’m not saying any of these cars are bad, all 3 were very fun, and depending on the priorities of the buyer, a case can be made for any of them, but I have never seen a “circle jerk” that spilled over outside the confines of the internet into the showroom floor quite like I did with Subaru, and that to me speaks VERY loudly of it being over rated.

The rated 0-60 times you get in the wrx are with clutch dumps, do that in your wrx every day and see how that goes. Youd be a jackass to launch your wrx like they do on car motor trend every time they get their hands on a car. Also the transmission isnt good for much more power than it puts out stock, its less fuel effecient, crappy interior, no hatch version, no hid lights, no 6 speed transmission, shitty options list altogether. And yes it has its upsides, but every car does

And im not saying the wrx is bad but neither is the st. Making an argument that one car is overrated just because another is better is stupid, even if the wrx is better.

And btw, new you would pay 23 grand for the st not 24 for the facelifted model, thats what i paid.
